In Vadym Kholodenko's return to the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, the young sensation will turn to Sergei Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 3, the composition with which he won the 2013 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. The work is a striking masterpiece showcasing the evocative colors of both the piano and the orchestra as a whole. A composer whose own commanding and charismatic style is well-suited to stand alongside this piece is Richard Strauss, whose "Ein Heldenleben (A Hero's Life)" will also be performed. The evening will open with Stephanie Berg's "Ravish and Mayhem," as part of the RPO's shift toward highlighting the music of contemporary composers. Ward Stare conducts. The program promises to be highly spirited and engaging, with an emphasis on youthful artistry.
The RPO performs on Thursday, March 3, 7:30 p.m., and Saturday, March 5, 8 p.m., at Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre, 60 Gibbs Street. $22-$94. 454-2100; rpo.org.
