a striking documentary that follows filmmaker Jeff Maloof as he seeks to solve the riddle of an unknown photographer’s identity. Maloof serendipitously stumbles upon an unexpected treasure when the box of 100,000 photographic negatives he buys at an auction turns out to be full of intricate compositions by an unknown photographer. She turns out to be the late Vivian Maier, a recluse who worked as a nanny and lived in Chicago for most of her life. Though this unknown cache of pictures earns Maier posthumous acclaim and recognition as an accomplished street photographer, what Maloof discovers as he explores further into her life complicates this portrait.
