Alex Pangman Regarded as Canada's "sweetheart of swing," Alex Pangman has proven herself a talented and learned student of the classic jazz singers. After initial successes in the Canadian circuit and a subsequent health-necessitated break from touring, Pangman discovered Toronto's bluegrass and string-band scene. Culture Clash Before directing the music program at Rochester Institute of Technology, Carl Atkins, leader of the local band Culture Clash, was known locally for his leadership roles with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and Hochstein School of Music. But it was before he came to Rochester that Atkins established his credentials on the jazz scene, playing with Ray Charles, Herbie Hancock, and Jaki Byard and co-directing the Thelonious Monk Institute.
